Settlement & growth (pre-1960)

The pre-American landscape of Beaverhead County was home to the Shoshone, Salish, and Kootenai peoples, who traveled through the Beaverhead Valley and the high mountain passes for seasonal hunting and trade. The Lewis and Clark Expedition documented the area in 1805, naming the Beaverhead River after a prominent rock formation. Permanent American settlement began with the discovery of gold in Grasshopper Creek in 1862, which drew thousands of prospectors and led to the establishment of Bannack, Montana's first territorial capital. Though the gold boom faded by the 1870s, a core of former miners turned to cattle ranching along the Beaverhead and Big Hole rivers, founding small communities such as present-day Dillon, Lima, Wisdom, and Jackson.

The arrival of the Utah and Northern Railway in 1880 transformed Dillon into a supply and shipping hub, attracting Scandinavian homesteaders—Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes—who filed claims around Dell, Glen, and Lakeview throughout the 1880s and 1890s. These groups established the county's ranching economy, which remains the backbone today.
